‘Decision power.’ It’s a word you often hear in volleyball articles or broadcasts. You can tell by feeling how a team has a strong decision-making power and a player who must score in any situation. However, it is not easy to understand this at a glance. There are a lot of situations and a lot of data to use. I’m going to talk about decision power only in one of those situations. Who took the most ‘end of the rally’ in the women’s division? In search of another data
hidden in the situation, the
Korea Volleyball Federation (hereinafter referred to as KOVO) organizes all official tournament records hosted by data. Through this, reporters can check the players’ records that change in real time and view more detailed data after the game. Currently, the attack records provided by KOVO include attack success rate, efficiency, and share. If you dig into more detail, you can also check the success rate of various types of attacks. The attack success rate is calculated by ‘success/attempt x 100’, and the attack efficiency is calculated by ‘(success – error – opponent’s block)/attempt x 100’.
By looking at the attack success rate, you can roughly guess the attacking ability of a player. Offensive efficiency excludes errors and errors blocked by the opponent’s blocking, so it’s literally easy to figure out how ‘more efficiently’ the attacker handled the attack. However, it is rather difficult to talk about the attacking power with these two indicators.
The longer the rally, the more attempts to attack, but the fewer successful attacks. Naturally, the success rate also goes down. In particular, it is difficult to find a high success rate in the women’s division, where the rally is longer than the men’s division. Even if it shows a low success rate numerically, there are cases where it is evaluated as “good decision power”. Then, what figures can we talk about attack decision power for those who want to analyze volleyball more deeply?
Decisiveness, what is it? First of all, when is the situation in which we talk about decision power in volleyball? This is often the case when the opponent’s serve shakes the receive greatly, or when the opponent’s attack makes the dig incomplete, or the difficultly raised ball is successfully scored. Along with this, it is often mentioned when scoring in a long rally situation. Among these, I would like to pay attention to our team’s dig-set-attack after the opponent’s attack, rather than the general attack pattern that starts with the opponent’s serve and leads to our team’s receive-set-attack. The attack success rate after Digg was calculated as ‘Attack success after Digg/Attack attempts after Digg x 100’, and the efficiency was calculated as ‘(Attack success after Digue – Error – Opponent’s block)/Attack attempts after Digue x 100’. We summarized the records from round 1 to round 3 of the women’s division in the 2022-2023 season. We looked at each team’s cumulative and round-by-round records up to the third round. Korea Expressway Corporation kicked the ball 1514 times until the 3rd round and succeeded in the second most digs among the 7 teams. After Digg, the number of attack attempts was the highest at 1415. But there were many mistakes. The efficiency remained at 19.7% as 106 crime rooms and 79 interceptions were added, the most along with IBK Industrial Bank of Korea. In fact, Korea Expressway Corporation continued to struggle until the 3rd round due to the low decision-making power of foreign players this season. Katarina Jovic, who was nominated in the draft for foreign players, even had a weakness for attacking from the back. In a situation where the set was not properly set due to this wind, Katarina’s ability to solve was disappointing at every important moment.
Korea Expressway Corporation, which consistently maintained its 3rd place in the 1st and 2nd rounds, was shaken sharply in the 3rd round. As a result, he recorded 3 consecutive losses for the first time in the season, finished the 3rd round with 2 wins and 4 losses, and finished the round ranking in 6th place. Director Kim Jong-min talked about decision making several times. “In a situation where a decision has to be made, there is no decision. It’s a pity that the strikers’ decision-making ability is bad.” He said numbers don’t lie. What about the record?
Korea Expressway Corporation showed a success rate of over 30% and an efficiency of over 20% until the 2nd round, but after a sharp dig in the 3rd round, the number of counterattacks fell. Thanks to the best libero appointment, the dig success was 540, the most among the 3 rounds. However, both the success rate (28.5%) and efficiency (13.7%) dropped significantly as the number of cases blocked by opponent blockers, including criminals, increased. In the end, it is clear at a glance that the number of cases where Korea Expressway Corporation finishes in a rally situation has decreased significantly compared to the previous round.
KGC Ginseng Corporation, who finished the first round in 4th place, recorded 1 win and 5 losses in the second round and placed 6th in the round. Looking at the record of round 2, first of all, the number of successful digs was lower than that of other teams. It was sixth with 448 dig success. This means that they did not create more counterattack opportunities than other teams. Naturally, the number of attack attempts and successes also decreased. Among these, 41 attacks were blocked, the most among the 7 teams. After the 2nd round dig, the attack efficiency was 20.7%. 6th place overall
Of course, there will be other factors for the reason why Kgc Ginseng Corporation was sluggish in the second round. In fact, KGC Ginseng Corporation had the most of the 7 teams with 139 rooms in the 2nd round. It’s been caught on its own. It is not possible to evaluate the rise and sluggishness of the team only with the success of the attack after Digg, but the KGC Ginseng Corporation in the 3rd round has increased its decision power. The number of dig successes is still at the bottom (473 times, 6th place), but unlike before, it did not easily miss the opportunity that came. Compared to the second round, even though the number of offenses (27-32) increased after the dig, the number of blocked opponents (41-28) decreased significantly. The change in this number also led to the match result. KGC Ginseng Corporation suffered its first defeat of the season in the third round against Hyundai E&C on December 25th. Correlation between
attack decision power and ranking?
Hyundai E&C and Heungkuk Life Insurance are fighting for the top spot in the first and second places. It was strong even in the counterattack situation after Digg. Hyundai E&C ranked second in success rate (38.7%) and first in efficiency (28.7%). In fact, from round 1 to round 2, when he had 12 consecutive wins, the attack success rate after Digg was the highest at 39.8%. In the second round, there were difficulties as the 5-set match became more frequent, but Hyundai E&C was strong in every difficult moment. It boasted an attack success rate of 40.5% after Digg. It was the only success rate in the 40% range among the 7 clubs.
He passed the first hurdle safely, but it was difficult to overcome the crisis that came in the third round. As Yasmin Bedart (registered name Yasmin) was away due to herniated disc surgery, there was no player to take charge of a decisive blow. Hwang Yeon-joo entered instead and performed well, but there were definitely games where Yasmin felt the void. Hyundai E&C players also said in unison, “As Yasmin is absent, there is no player responsible for a big attack.” Even in the records, Yasmin’s absence is easily revealed. After Hyundai Engineering & Construction’s dig in the 3rd round, both the attack success rate (40.5% → 36.5%) and efficiency (31.1% → 27.7%) dropped significantly compared to the 2nd round.
Heungkuk Life Insurance ranked 3rd in success rate (37.7%) and 2nd in efficiency (27.3%), but the attack connection attempt after dig (attack after dig/dig success) was the highest at 94.2%. Instead of simply passing the ball, they made their own play. persisted with it. The number of cases in which crimes were made or blocked was second only to Hyundai E&C. It is interpreted that there were few cases in which he easily gave points to his opponent by concentrating on the game in a rally situation. Here, there must have been an effect caused by Kim Yeon-kyung, who has a high volleyball IQ, at the center of the counterattack.
The opposite case is Pepper Savings Bank, which lingers at the bottom of the leaderboard. First of all, it showed a low number in the counterattack situation after the dig. With 1309 dig success, the least among the 7 teams, they failed to make the first step in the counterattack. It was difficult to kick the ball up, but the number of times it was connected with their own attack was the least. It was the only one that didn’t get past 90%. It recorded a low connection rate of 85.2%. The success rate is also the lowest at 30.5%. 먹튀검증
In the end, the record reveals that Pepper Savings Bank showed the weakest among the seven teams in the counterattack situation after Digg. On the other hand, there are also positive factors. The success rate (27.6% → 30.6% → 34.2%) and efficiency (14.8% → 15.0% → 22.7%) increased with each round.
Looking at this figure alone, it can be inferred that the higher the attack success rate after the dig counterattack, the higher the rank. Of course, it cannot be concluded that this record encompasses all wins and losses. Volleyball is so diverse that it is not easy to generalize. There will definitely be a difference in the difficulty of the attack, as both Digg, who defended the opponent’s repeated attacks, and Digg, who took hard hits, are all marked as 1 success. In addition, it is difficult to say that it is all of the attacking power in the rally because the blocking success that blocks the opponent’s attack is excluded. In addition, there are many variables that can influence the outcome of a volleyball game, such as attack, serve, and blocking after receiving. So numbers don’t lie, but interpretations sometimes lead to lies.
Nevertheless, it can be confirmed that a certain degree of attack decision power is correlated with ranking. The conclusion is simple. The team that took the most of the end of the rally with an attack is a strong team.
