Roenis Elias (SSG Landers) took the mound against the Kiwoom Heroes of the Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League 2023 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul on 1 January, giving up three runs (three earned) in six innings, striking out 11 batters and walking one.
Elias started the game with a double to Lee Hyung-jong in the top of the first inning before giving up an RBI single to Kim Hye-sung. He then gave up a single to Lee Jung-hoo, but retired the next three batters to avoid further damage.
Elias started the second inning with singles to Kim Dong-heon and Kim Soo-hwan, but retired the next three batters without allowing a run. He then settled down and got through the fifth inning without any major threats. However, he gave up two runs in the sixth inning and finished the game with three runs in six innings.
Before the game against Kiwoom on the 2nd, Elias had a brief chat with SSG manager Kim Won-hyung on the field. He was watching batting practice and asked to speak to the coach.
“Elias approached me first,” Kim told the press after the meeting. He asked me what problems I had. He asked me to solve it.” “There was no problem. I think three runs in six innings is good,” he said.
“I said to Elias, ‘I gave up three runs in six innings. It’s not that we didn’t play well. It’s just that the number 3-0 looks big because we didn’t score,'” he said. “I told him, ‘I didn’t pitch badly, I’m just sorry. I told him it was okay.”
Elias made his debut on 24 May against the Incheon LG Twins, allowing three runs (three earned) in five innings. He followed that up with three consecutive quality starts (QS+, 7+ innings, 3 earned runs or less).
However, he faltered on 18 June, giving up four runs (three earned) in five innings against the Incheon Lotte Giants and six runs (six earned) in five innings against the Incheon Samsung Lions on 24 June. Despite the quality start against the Kiwoom, he still had a lot to work on.
